Save Your Vision with these Helpful Tips!

Your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body, so it’s essential to take care of them just like you would any other body part.

However, it’s easy to strain your eyes between computers, smartphones, tablets, and so on and experience technology burnout.

March is both Save Your Vision Month and Workplace Eye Wellness Month. Keep reading to learn ways to protect your eyes and avoid burnout.

Take Breaks

This one is obvious, we know, but it’s probably the most important! Whether you’re looking at your computer during work hours or your phone in your free time, your eyes need a break.

The longer you stare without taking a break, the more it’ll negatively impact your eyes. Try out the 20-20-20 method: for every 20 minutes you look at a screen, take a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away.

Adjust Settings

The brightness of your screen can be helpful. However, it’s not necessary to set your screen to maximum brightness throughout your entire day. When it’s not needed as much, try adjusting it to a lower setting. This will decrease the amount of blue light that you regularly expose your eyes to on a daily basis.

You can also consider increasing the font size on your device. This allows your eyes to rest a little because they’re not working as hard to read a bigger font as they would a smaller one.

Blink Often

Believe it or not, many people tend to blink less when working on a computer, ultimately leading to dry eyes. Blinking has many functions, one being that it produces tears that freshen up your eyes. By blinking more while you work, you’ll give your eyes a much-needed moment to relax and refresh.

Try a Document Holder

If your eyes are going back and forth between documents, it might be worth your while to print one out and place it on a document holder. By doing so, you’re able to alternate between paper and screen, which will give your eyes a much-needed rest.

Do Some Light Stretches

It’s safe to assume most of us stare at screens for the majority of the day. Sometimes it becomes too much, and you find yourself in a technology burnout. However, this might be disguised as an additional stressor at work, leading us to feel burnt out due to work in general.

Give yourself time throughout the day to relieve some tension. Focus on some light stretches that can be done at your desk and rest your eyes while doing so. You’d be surprised at what a 5-minute stretch break can do for your productivity!

Get Regular Eye Exams

While following these tips will definitely help your daily life, it’s still essential to get your eyes checked out by a professional. Find a doctor of optometry near you and schedule regular eye exams—it will greatly benefit you in the long run!
