What Do EYE Need to Know About Cataracts?

“Yay, a blog post about cataracts,” said no one ever.  We get it – it’s not a very exciting topic, but before you roll your eyes (see what we did there?!) and close this window, give us a few minutes to help you learn a little more.  We’ll do our best to keep it exciting, so you don’t fall asleep!

Did you know that June is Cataract Awareness Month?  And we are here to help raise awareness and educate you on one of the leading causes of treatable vision loss.

Dr. Geoffrey Brent, your trusted Premier Eye Care Group surgeon, performs cataract eye surgery for our patients on the regular.  With more than 24 million Americans age 40 and over being diagnosed with cataracts, chances are good that you may develop cataracts as you get older.  But don’t worry, it is easily treatable and not the end of the world!

Do yourself a quick favor and answer these three questions:

  1. Do you avoid driving at night because of the halos and glare you see coming off of oncoming traffic?
  2. Do you need more lights on to read comfortably?
  3. What about when you’re watching TV (did someone say Netflix?) or looking at pictures – do the colors seem blurred together and less vivid?

Raise your hand if you answered “yes” to any of these questions – this may very well be indicators of cataracts.  In a nutshell, cataracts are the clouding of the lens of the eye.  While they are very common to develop as you age and don’t necessarily cause pain or eye irritation, they can be an annoyance to deal with.  The cloudiness makes images become blurry and dim, almost as if you’re looking out a dirty window – not fun!

Not eye-deal, we know … but, Premier Eye Care Group can help!

While cataracts are as common as gray hair as you age, it’s important to note that you can’t just take medication or go on a special diet to make them magically go away.  Signs of cataracts are irreversible, and the only treatment option is cataract surgery.  Scarier yet, untreated cataracts are actually the leading cause of vision loss in the United States – don’t let this happen to you!

As daunting as surgery may sound, rest assured that cataract eye surgery is one of the most common, safe and effective surgeries around.  Even more so when you enlist your trust to Dr. Brent from Premier Eye Care Group, the top cataract eye surgery center in and around Harrisburg, PA.

Our team of skilled eye physicians will assess your vision needs and help you decide which replacement lens is ideal for you.  If you have other preexisting vision issues, such as astigmatism or presbyopia, we will recommend certain advanced-technology lenses that can correct both cataracts and your other eye conditions – reducing your need of eyeglasses or contacts to see correctly – #winning!  We will also go over all health insurance and payment plan information with you in advance before scheduling your surgery.

Cataract surgery 101

This 15-minute outpatient surgery with a 1-hour rest period immediately after the procedure will leave you seeing clearly and back to work the next day.  Think of it as replacing a frosted window – the surgeon will clean away the cloudiness by replacing the lens as if you would replace a window pane.  Once the cloudiness is removed and a new lens is replaced, you’ll be left with clearer and brighter vision after surgery – welcome back clear vision, I missed you!
