What Glasses Look Good for Each Face Shape?

Chances are you know your body’s weight, height, blood type, and allergies by memory.  But what about your face shape?  This may seem like a less important body feature to know by heart and you are correct.  However, when it comes to certain cosmetic rituals and accessorizing, it is good to be aware of your face shape.  Knowing the shape of your face helps you determine your best hair length/style, what type of hat to wear, and which makeup to use to contour and highlight your face.  Face shape also plays a large role in selecting the perfect shaped eyeglass frames to fit your face type.

When determining the shape of your face, there are three factors to consider:  the widest part of your face, the shape of your jaw, and the length of your face.  Pull back your hair and take a long look in the mirror to decide which shape best describes your face.  There are seven primary face shapes:  oval, heart, oblong, square, diamond, round, and triangle.

Premier Eye Care Group helps you determine your face shape and best-fit eyewear:

Oval – A wider forehead with the width tapering towards your chin line are indicators of having an oval shaped face.  If you have an oval shaped face, you are considered ideal because of the balanced-proportions of your face.  Look for eyeglass frames that are as wide as (or even a tad bit wider) than the broadest part of your face.  Walnut-shaped frames are a good pick for oval shaped faces.

Heart – Do you have a pointy jawline and an angled chin?  Is the top third of your face wide, while the bottom third very narrow?  If so, your face shape is probably considered heart shaped.  People with heart shaped faces should choose frames that are wider at the bottom to reduce the apparent width of your forehead.  Light-colored frames, as well as rimless ones, are a good bet for heart shaped faces.

Oblong – When your face’s horizontal to vertical proportion is more than one and a half the size, your face shape falls into the oblong category.  To make an oblong face look shorter and more balanced, try eyeglass frames that have more depth than width.  Geometric frames, in square or rectangular shapes, are the most popular for people with oblong faces.

Square – If your forehead, cheeks, and jawline are about equal in width, you most likely have a square shaped face.  To elongate and soften the sharp angles of a square face, look for eyeglass frames that have more width than depth.  Narrow frame styles, such as ovals, can help to soften harsh angles and make square-shaped faces appear longer.

Diamond – Is your face narrow at the forehead and jawline with broad cheekbones in between?  If so, you are considered to have the rarest shaped face – diamond.  To help highlight your eyes and soften your dramatic cheekbones, try glasses that have distinctive brow lines.  Rimless eyeglasses and oval or cat-eye shaped frames are also good choices.

Round – If your cheeks are the widest part of your face, your face shape is classified as round.  To make a round face appear slimmer and longer, try wearing angular, narrow frames.  Rectangular frames that are wider than they are deep are another good option when it comes to lengthening a round face.

Triangular – If your jaw is the widest part of your face, you most likely have a triangular (sometimes also referred to as “pear shaped”) shaped face.  The best frames for triangular faces add width and draw attention to the top third of your face.  Frames that are cat-eyed shaped, as well as with bold colors and heavy accents along the brow line, are ideal types of eyewear for this face shape.
