Winter Eye Care: What You Need to Know

Winter is full of fun activities, both indoor and outdoor. It’s the most wonderful time of the year, after all!

But did you know it can be a tough time of year for your eyes? Keep reading to learn some tips for winter eye care and how to keep your eyes feeling their best all winter long.

The Issue: Increased Screen Time

Did you know that your eyes are more under strain during the winter months compared to the warmer months?

There are two main reasons why this happens:

  • Colder temperatures throughout the winter make us want to go inside much more frequently. Once we’re inside, we’re most likely using one of our devices, whether it’s a laptop, tablet, phone, computer, or another type of screen.
  • More often than not, people prefer to be inside when the sun sets for the night. As we all know, the sun sets way earlier in the winter, making us stay inside for the night starting between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. With all this free time inside, we’re bound to pick up one of our many screens. The longer we’re inside at night, the longer our screen time becomes.

With increased screen time comes an increased need to protect our vision. Make sure to take care of your eyes this winter by following these tips!

The Issue: Sun Exposure

Did you know protecting your eyes from the sun during the winter is equally as important as during the summer?

There are plenty of factors that come into play when it comes to sun exposure:

  • Leaves falling from trees provide less shade.
  • The sun sits lower in the winter than it does during the summer, providing an intense and increased glare throughout the winter months.
  • The sun can reflect off ice and snow from both below and above your line of vision, doubling your exposure to UV rays.

While we’re vulnerable to sun exposure, we’re also vulnerable to many other factors during the winter as well. We should make sure to protect our eyes throughout the winter months and especially the holiday season.

The Issue: Dry Eyes

Did you know your dry eye symptoms can be exacerbated in the winter? From strong gusts of wind to the dry heat from our heating systems, there are plenty of factors that can further aggravate these already existing issues.

Dry eyes during the winter are expected, so here are some tips to alleviate some of the irritation you might experience over the next few months:

  • Open your windows, even for only a few minutes a day
  • Lower the temperatures in rooms throughout your home or office when possible
  • Invest in a humidifier or keep a bowl of water near your radiator
  • Ask your optometrist about moisturizing eye drops or ointments
